Explanation of Our Voting Process
Since the mid-1960s, West Shore has had noncompetitive elections for Board seats with the Nominating Committee nominating only as many candidates as there are spaces open on the Board (a common practice among nonprofit organizations). However, since part of our 5th Principle is “the use of the democratic process within our congregations,” we have several ways for someone to be nominated to the Board or the Nominating Committee.
1. Complete the Path to Leadership classes. This is a new adult education path that introduces people interested in being on the Board or otherwise engaged in the leadership of the church to a few of the facets of that leadership. The four-session path includes sessions on our CARE Covenant and policy governance (the governance method used by the Board). Completing these classes means that you might one day be interested in being nominated to the Board.
2. Speak to a member of the Nominating Committee. These friendly people, whose names and faces are posted on the bulletin board outside the ministers’ office, look for people who would be willing and able to serve on the Board. If you think you could be one of these people, speak to one of them about your possible nomination.
3. Nominate yourself. In the bylaws of the church, there is a process for nominations in addition to those of the Nominating Committee to come before the Congregation at the Annual Meeting. This process allows you to be nominated to the Board or to the Nominating Committee. A petition with your written consent and the signatures of twenty or more Members of the Church must be addressed to the President of the Congregation and submitted to any Officer at least 20 days prior to the Annual Meeting.
