Mental Health Ministry at West Shore
In accordance with the first Unitarian Universalist principle which recognized “The inherent worth and dignity of each person” a group of members of West Shore is in the process of creating a Mental Health Ministry with the following goals:
-
To decrease the stigma that surrounds mental illness
-
To help members of our congregation to be more understanding toward individuals and families who face mental illness
-
To create a welcoming atmosphere for people who are struggling with mental illness
-
To support families and caregivers
-
To provide information about and direction toward community resources
-
To bring a sense of healing
-
To address mental health from the pulpit on a regular basis
As this Website is built, we expect to provide the following:
-
Connections to the Pastoral Care Team
-
A list of community resources
-
A list of readings (books, poems, articles)
-
Some facts about mental illness which makes a distinction between normal reactions (grief, great joy ….) and mental illness
-
Self-help groups which are available either at the church or nearby.
Please check back with this site as we develop this important ministry. (February 2010)
