Frequently Asked Questions
What kind of adult programming is available at West Shore UU Church?
Adult programming is referred to as PUURL (Practicing a Unitarian Universalist Life), a way to deepen and enhance a person’s understanding and commitment to a religius life informed by our faith. Click here to view the PUURL brochure to learn the four quadrants of mind, body, heart and spirit that divide the classes, events and opportunities. Knitting Ministry, Tai Chi, Friday Morning Book Group, Process Theology, Network of Spiritual Progressives, Creative Arts Practice, Small Group Ministry and Zen sitting groups, are samplings of these programs. The PUURL brochure is mailed to members and copies are available in the church pamphlet racks. In addition, individual classes are promoted in the monthly church newsletter and the Sunday orders of service.
What are the benefits of participating in an adult programs opportunity, and how do I enroll?
Participants gain new information and new awareness about themselves and about Unitarian Universalism. They also meet and get to know other adults in this faith community. You may click here to enroll on-line, by phone (440.333.2255), or at the church on Sunday mornings and during business hours, Monday through Friday, 900-5:00.
Who teaches/facilitates these classes?
Facilitators are usually interested church members who volunteer their time, talent and energy. It’s their gift to West Shore Church. In addition, the co-ministers and staff also offer classes each semester. If you would like to offer a class, please complete the class proposal form (link to class proposal form) and submit to the Adult Programs Committee mailbox at church or give to Kathy Strawser, Director of Lifespan Faith Development.
Who determines what classes are offered?
The Adult Programs Committee, with the support of the co-ministers and the Director of Lifespan Faith Development, determines the number and type of programming offered. This committee also mounts large-scale opportunities, such as lecture series, to the northeast Ohio community.
Is there a fee for classes?
There is a semester participation fee, $10 for members and pledging friends, and $20 for non-members. This fee covers any and all classes/opportunities for the semester. The fee covers class materials, except for books, building use, recognition of the gift of those who facilitate and seed money for large-scale adult programming events. Fees are paid on an honor system, on Sunday morning. Fees may also be left in the PUURL box on the church office counter at any other time. If a person is in need of a fee reduction or fee waiver, s/he should contact one of the co-ministers.
Where/when do classes meet?
Classes usually meet on weekday evenings, though a number of classes do meet during the morning, including Sundays. At present, all classes meet at the church. For meeting dates and times of specific classes, please click here for the PUURL brochure.
How is adult programming evaluated?
The Adult Programs Committee works to ensure that all four quadrants of PUURL are filled with quality programming. In addition, most classes and their facilitators complete an evaluation at their class’s conclusion, and those results are given to the co-ministers and the Board of Trustees.
